Introduction

To ease the adoption of the system by new users, Filejet asked Create Ape to design a user-friendly self-onboarding channel that transferred users directly from the website to the cloud-based platform.

The Challenge

Since we were designing for a less tech-inclined persona, our we knew our biggest hurdle would be breaking down the process to ensure usability. As we explored the existing onboarding flow, we noticed a lack of explanation behind the purpose of each screen — creating confusion for a new user interacting with the product. On top of this, each step was missing helpful functionalities to assist managers in inviting clients, adding entities, and updating statuses.

Solution

To illustrate the tech-related capabilities of an average entity manager, we created user personas based on feedback from our interview session to highlight the real-world pain points of the people we’re designing for. We determined that Filejet leaned too heavily on the platform’s technology instead of contextualizing functionalities. To explore other presentation ideas, we analyzed key competitors to identify opportunities for instruction and education.
Research
We started with user and stakeholder interviews to identify pain points. Then, we matched our data with our heuristic evaluation to construct a new onboarding flow.

We leaned on the client’s knowledge of the brand to keep our designs aligned with their vision. Through our close collaboration, we created visuals that enhanced the newly-streamlined process.

Many SaaS companies rely on their tech capabilities when onboarding new users, but those value props always have to be contextualized for the users so they can understand how everything works. This was the crux of our redesign for Filejet. By understanding the users’ wants and needs, we mapped out an onboarding flow to help new users understand and appreciate the functionalities of the app, regardless of their tech knowledge.
